Born in Japan to Japanese parents and looks like Japanese, but he spent most of his life in England and became a British citizen when he was verging on 30.

Many of his characters have a highly receptive and don't try to have any resolution to the end. It has been pointed out that it is similar to Japanese idea of mono no aware, though he believes his novels have nothing common with Japanese novels.

His works has been translated into more than forty languages and some of them were adapted into films. The Time Magazine named him as "The 50 greatest British writers since 1945", and there he stated that the reason why he was selected may be his nationality.
